British Council

Cheltenham Bournside School was awarded the British Council International School Award in 2019 and held until 2022. We are currently working towards reaccreditation in this prestigious award.

The International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education.  Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council's work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need for life and work in today's world.

Bournside's international work includes celebrating a European Week around the European Day of Languages and a Chinese New Year Week during the annual celebrations.  We also work with a partner school in Spain, exchanging letters and recipes for a truly international Bake-Off competition.  Internationalism is embedded in our curriculum, with students learning about other countries and cultures in subjects ranging from geography to music, as well as in languages.

The International School Award encourages and supports to develop:

  • An international ethos embedded throughout the school
  • A whole school approach to international work
  • Collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools
  • Year-round international activity
  • Involvement of the wider community
