Diversity celebrated with the appointment of nine new EAL Ambassadors

17 Feb

A group of students have been appointed as EAL (English as an Additional Language) Ambassadors this term at Cheltenham Bournside School in a celebration of cultural diversity. More than 40 languages are spoken at the school, including Arabic, Cantonese, German, Mandarin, Slovak, Polish and Portuguese.

Headteacher, Mr Jefferies, presented students with a badge in recognition of their new role. He said, “Languages are a crucial part of our curriculum at Bournside – we're one of the few schools in the country that offer four languages from Year 7 upwards; we give all students the opportunity to learn French, Spanish, German and even Mandarin. The appointment of our EAL ambassadors builds on this and is a delightful way to ensure that all of our students – whatever their background – have their voices heard".

Mrs Haines, the EAL staff lead, said “It’s really exciting to appoint our new team of EAL ambassadors who will help us to celebrate our school’s diverse languages and cultures and support EAL students as they settle into life at Bournside. Together, we also hope to plan a number of EAL events in school, perhaps even involving families”.

Congratulations to Moataz, Mohanned, Rama, Lana, Liam, Lena, Hadrian, Laura and Jakub.
