A sixth form with a strong sense of community

16 Jan

For parents and students looking to join an ambitious sixth form with excellent teaching, compassionate pastoral care, extensive grounds and a vast programme of extra-curricular activities, the team at Cheltenham Bournside School are getting ready to welcome you to our upcoming open evening on Thursday 26th January.

Choosing the right sixth form is an important step in your school career. By choosing Bournside, students can be confident they will be supported and challenged to excel within a strong school community environment - something highlighted by Ofsted: “leaders put the welfare of pupils, as well as academic achievement, at the heart of everything they do.”

Students here are treated as young adults. They are given greater responsibility for their learning, alongside a school structure and a dedicated team that prioritises individualised support. Our Sixth Form academic and pastoral teams operate side-by-side to monitor, guide and support the wellbeing of each student.

Now in our 50th year on Warden Hill Road, Cheltenham Bournside School is where the academic and personal ability of every student is identified, nurtured and developed. Ofsted found that “pupils enjoy school,” and that there is a “strong sense of community for both staff and pupils," within an “inclusive environment."

Skills for the next step

With 38 A Level and BTEC courses to choose from, and a brand-new Level 3 Applied Diploma in criminology for 2023, we are proud to offer the widest range of A Levels and vocational options available locally.

There are three clear pathways to ensure each student is well-suited to their subjects:

  • PATHWAY 1: Studying three or four A Levels
  • PATHWAY 2: Studying three BTEC courses
  • PATHWAY 3: Studying a combination of BTEC courses and A Levels

Our A Level results are consistently above average and in 2022, students gained places at prestigious Russel Group universities, including Oxford University, and on degree-level apprenticeships in industry areas such as accounting, with local and national employers.

More than academia

Sixth form students enjoy their own space and benefits within the school, including private study areas, a large common room and dedicated café, the Pitstop, which provides a vibrant social space for students to work and socialise outside of the classroom, much like the professional spaces students will find at university or in the workplace in the future.

That's all in addition to the specialist facilities available to you throughout the school. This includes a modern library, Alan Turing Maths Hub, brand-new fitness suite and fantastic Sports Centre facilities. We are proud of our long-standing positive reputation for sport at Bournside. We have a thriving Athlete Development Programme and offer a full calendar of sports fixtures where Sixth Form students both play for, and help to manage, the top teams in the school.

Opportunities for mentoring and leadership can be found throughout the school. Whether your passion lies in sport, art, drama, music or the academic side of school, beyond the classroom we offer a huge range of opportunities to have fun and to develop personal leadership skills. Students are encouraged to take part in a diverse mix of enrichment opportunities alongside studies, for example, Duke of Edinburgh, Young Enterprise, the Early Applicant Scheme, Cyber competitions and community volunteering.

All of these experiences, alongside your studies, are designed to broaden students' experience and to prepare you for life beyond the sixth form.

We look forward to meeting you.

The Cheltenham Bournside Sixth Form open evening takes place on Thursday, January 26, from 5.30pm – 8.00pm. The application form will go live during the open evening, and the application deadline is Friday 24th February.
