Photo competition winners

Many congratulations to our year 12 student Deri who won first prize in the Gloucestershire Young Photographer of the Year competition, and Aniela in year 10, who received a Commended award. This is a fantastic achievement by two very talented students.

The competition is organised by Cheltenham Camera Club and received entries from a total of 976 students from 26 different schools. Bournside School submitted some 75 photographs from all year groups, and the judges were very impressed with the standard of entries from our students, giving us the Best School Entries award.

Deri’s winning photograph was taken whilst he was on holiday in Sri Lanka visiting an ancient palace. “I noticed someone drop a bag of fruit, and the monkey steal the bag, taking it up into the trees. I liked the juxtaposition between nature and the man-made world,” said Deri.

Aniela’s black and white photograph of a train station was taken when she was on holiday in Cornwall with her family. “I thought that it would make a good photo because of the mist and the man standing there,” she said.

The students will receive their awards at an awards ceremony hosted by the mayor on Thursday 2nd May at Chapel Arts on Knapp Road in Cheltenham. Selected works by Bournside students and those from other schools in Gloucestershire will be showcased at Chapel Arts in an exhibition from Wednesday 1st May until Saturday 11th May (10am to 4pm).
